What is Organic Astragalus Root?
Astragalus is a genus in the plant family Fabaceae. They are found in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge, known as Huang qi or Milk Vetch, produces an herbal root that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat illnesses related to fatigue and "deficient Qi." One of the major bioactive substances responsible for its medicinal properties is a group of molecules called Flavonoids, which are unique to plants. Astragalus flavor tea is prepared in a similar way to the preparation of Oolong and Pu-erh tea.
- Place 7 g of Astragalus in 500 ml boiling water.
- Remove the foam floating on top using a strainer.

The process can be repeated many times with a fresh solution until desired results are achieved.
Hot Water Extract (or decoction), A hot water extract of the root involves reduction of aqueous extracts or powdered root in the water below the boiling point, typically 80-90 C (176-194 F), which is just hot enough that evaporation is minimal.

How do you Grow Astragalus?
Astragalus grows best in well-drained loam soils with a pH between 6 and 7. There are 1724 different species of Astragalus growing throughout Asia, North America, and Europe so it's easy to see why organic farms tend to gravitate towards these regions for their harvest. It does well in full sun or part shade conditions with adequate watering during dry spells. While they can be grown by seed, propagation typically involves replanting root cuttings which are not only easier to propagate, but also more likely to produce healthy plants. It takes approximately 3-5 years for Astragalus Root to mature and while harvesting roots is not recommended, many people cut off the top stems of the plant leaving some foliage to continue growing so they can harvest again the following year.
